Stress Response and nursing


Abstract
The purpose of this article is to review about human response and its nursing
intervention based on nursing literature in Korea.
1) Stressor
Identified stressors of patients in overall nursing situation were discomfort from
hospitalization, lack of information about overall therapy, unfamiliar environment, medication
problem, loss of indepency, social isolationand economic problem,
Stressor in critical care unit's patient were isolation, unfamilir equipments, alarm sound and
sleep deprivation.
Chronic health condition was increased stress response because life style change and longterm
medical compliance.
2) Stress response and personality
Type A behavior, health locus of control, hardness and type of monitor and blunter were
mediated stress response in stressful nursing situation. Nursing information was reduced
antipatory anxiety from unknown invasive medical procedures and dangerous surgery.
Supportive care was helpful to patients and their family with chronic condition to ennhance
self-care ability and social readaptation.
Relaxation, imagery and music therapy were also effective to counterconditioning stress
response.
In conclusion nursing researchers and practioners will try to develop effective nursing
intervention based on individual's personality and various nursing situation.
